The London Underground network may soon witness a high-speed digital revolution. The recommendations of the government’s Digital Britain report released yesterday aims at setting up high-speed broadband coverage in the UK transport network, which includes introduction of mobile broadband in all the Tube trains.
Introducing mobile broadband would signal an end to irregular network connection and blackouts in many parts of the Tube network, with commuting passengers getting reliable access to all the facilities that the mobile internet has to offer - (click for info on mobile internet with free laptop).
The Digital Britain report chalked out this idea to ensure that Britain has a comprehensive wireless broadband coverage when it hosts the 2012 Olympic Games, which are being positioned as the most digital games so far. This programme is also part of the government’s vision to see the UK become a major player in the global digital economy.
Plans for mobile broadband on the Tube have been floating around for quite some time now, but its implementation was always stalled for some reason or the other. Then London Underground announced that they could not risk a huge investment on mobile broadband at a time of economic instability. Now however, the government wants to see mobile broadband suppliers making its vision of mobile broadband on the Tube a reality.
