It’s hard to explain to a young person today that once upon a time in the not too distant past, we all had the same phone company. No choice; there was only AT&T. Today consumers everywhere are faced with a dizzying array of choices when it comes to phone service. This is especially true in major metropolitan areas like Indianapolis. In this new telecom world traditional phone companies like AT&T are getting into the television business. And traditional cable television providers like Comcast are getting into the phone business. Then there are the providers that use VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to turn your computer into a hi-tech telephone. Vonage is the most popular and there are even gadgets you can buy at radio shack that plug into a USB port on your computer and you only pay for the cost of the device and a small yearly fee.
Where Do You Begin?
Try putting something like Indianapolis phone service into your favorite search engine. There you should find some comparison search websites where you can enter your address, city, and zip code and they will direct you to a site that provides service in your area. Some of these sites are paid a finder’s fee for directing consumers to a provider’s site so make sure you check several of them. Two of the better ones are: ConnectMyPhone.com, and ConnectUtilities.com If you live in Indianapolis and you are only interested in basic service you might want to look at dpi Teleconnect. They offer prepaid local phone service in a basic package as well as in a package with different calling features. The advantages here are: you don’t have to put down a deposit, you don’t have to go through a credit check, and there is no long term commitment. Verizon and AT&T offer packages in Indianapolis as well but they have the advantage of being able to add long distance service. If you are considering more than basic local and long distance, you need to check out the wonderful world of bundles.
Bundles
All large telecommunications providers are offering “bundled” services where you package a variety of services into one package, or bundle, and save a good deal of money over the price of each service purchased individually. In Indianapolis AT&T is offering its new Uverse service where you can bundle fiber optic high definition television service, high speed internet access, and local and long distance service with a variety of calling features. You can order smaller bundles that include only 2 or three services. Verizon offers similar bundles, although their signature service, called Fios, is not yet in Indianapolis.
If you are confused by all of this try visiting a retail store from one of the major phone companies in the Indianapolis area. Verizon, AT&T, and Embarq all have stores in Indianapolis. Sometimes you just can’t beat having a human being to talk to. Good luck in your search!
